Flower Interruption: Tokyo, Japan, 2002

Flower Interruption: Tokyo Japan took place on Saturday, July 13, 2002 at 3:00 pm in the Shinjuku District, Japan's largest concentration of commercial businesses. The Shinjuku District has the world's busiest railway station, used by over 3.4 million people each day, and has a high concentration of people passing through year-round for business and shopping.

I selected a street off of one of the main arteries and laid down one long path of flowers that stretched down the street. The installation was a subtle, yet a highly visible and unexpected addition to the roadbed. Passersby were perplexed when they came across these colorful pieces that had no name or overt message attached to them. Some stopped to look at them more closely. One young couple asked (in very broken English) if it was an art performance, we nodded and they gave us a thumbs-up.
